This hand towel is dyed using a traditional Japanese technique called ”Chusen”, into a pattern of Sukeroku. This Tenugui depicts a Kabuki character called “Sukeroku”. Kabuki is a type of Japanese traditional performance, recognized as one of UNESCOfs intangible cultural heritages. Only male actors are allowed on the Kabuki stage, who also play female roles called “Oyama”. Unique movements following certain formations and an outstanding makeup called “Kumadori” are characteristic to this type of entertainment. “Sukeroku” is one of the most popular repertoires in Kabuki.
